Working for Ocean and Community

Thando is a Water Woman, a Marine Biologist, an Oceanographer, and all the good that we need to see in the world!

Thando is currently the Venture Development Lead for OceanHub Africa, the first and leading Pan-African ocean-impact accelerator. Thando has a background in Marine Biology, Physical Oceanography, and Environmental Sciences. She completed her MSc in Applied Ocean Sciences at the University of Cape Town, focusing her research on the analysis of climate model results in the Antarctic using historic humpback whale catch data. Currently, Thando is a Postgraduate Diploma candidate in Management Practice at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business.

Thando serves the ocean and community by understanding the socio-ecological dynamics in the marine space, underpinned by the necessary economic landscape as well as the policies that underpin our relationship with the marine space. She has served on local and international platforms as an advocate for inclusive ocean sustainability, working with the European Commission and its partners as An All-Atlantic Ocean Ambassador. Additionally, she consults on various marine and ocean literacy initiatives, helping to enhance public engagement and stewardship of marine environments.

As an ocean custodian at her core, Thando works to contribute to an ocean that is not only healthy and resilient but also inclusive of all communities. Underpinned by her drive to be a vessel for transformation, she hopes to bring light to the intersectionality that exists within the marine conservation space. In her free time, when Thando is not enjoying dives and swims with the community, she enjoys quiet moments, her shared yoga practice and time spent hiking.
