SharkSafe Barrier™

The SharkSafe BarrierTM is a novel shark-specific technology, aiming to solve the shark-human conflict by reducing the chances of shark encounters at recreational beaches.

The efficiency of this eco-friendly technology to exclude large sharks from a designated area has been extensively tested on white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) from 2012 to 2015. It’s design, to withstand harsh wave conditions, was improved through coastal engineering robustness trials since 2014.

Dr Sara Andreotti presents the 13-year journey at the forefront of the global shark-human conflict and the development history of this novel technology, which culminated in a first commercial installation in the Bahamas in August 2023. The technology combines magnetic and visual shark deterrents to offer a non-lethal alternative to traditional mitigation methods such as shark nets and drumlines.

Removing sharks and other large harmless marine animals negatively impacts marine biodiversity. SharkSafe Barrier’s interdisciplinary research integrates marine biology, engineering, and conservation. The practical application of this project highlights the potential of innovative solutions to support coastal tourism, together with sustainable marine conservation practices.

Each session consists of 20-minute presentations, followed by a joint Q&A session of 15 minutes.

ABOUT DR SARA ANDREOTTI

Dr. Sara Andreotti is a marine biologist and extraordinary lecturer at Stellenbosch University, specialising in global shark management and conservation. Her pioneering research, including genetic analysis and population assessments, led to the first national evaluation of the South African white shark population.

As a supervisor and researcher, Sara fosters academic growth, overseeing multiple postgraduate projects. In 2022 she co-founded the SharkWise Project Marine Internship program, to provide the needed platform and logistics to her students. Passionate about shark conservation, she also co-founded SharkSafe Barriers (Pty) Ltd. The company's flagship product, the SharkSafe BarrierTM, employs eco-friendly technology mimicking kelp forests to deter large predatory sharks. Sara, one of the co-inventors, envisions the barrier promoting peaceful coexistence between humans and sharks, revitalizing coastal ecology and tourism. Currently, she serves as the Chief Operating Officer and a Founding Director, driving the company mission forward.
