DAILY Behind the scenes tour of the rehabilitation centre

Sneak a Peek at the Penguins

This tour is only offered during the Plett Ocean Festival, so don't miss out.

The Tenikwa rehabilitation facilities are not usually open to the public.  Join them for a special visit to the wildlife rehabilitation facilities where you will gain insight into African penguins and other marine birds. Understand how you can help conserve them. This is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet the individuals who work diligently to protect wildlife.

During this tour, your guide will introduce you to the process and stages of wildlife rehabilitation from admission of an injured animal, to stabilising, and through to release. You will see the various areas at Tenikwa where this happens, and meet the staff who are involved in helping wildlife get back to nature where they belong. Our rehabilitation facilities are not open to the public on normal tours as most of the animals being treated need privacy and quiet to heal and it is important that they do not become accustomed to humans before they are released.

This special tour is being offered during the Plett Ocean Festival to increase awareness of the critically endangered African penguin, and will be carried out in a manner so as not to compromise the rehabilitation process of the animals and birds in rehabilitation at the time.

ABOUT TENIKWA

Wildlife Rehabilitation: Tenikwa accepts injured or abandoned animals,  terrestrial and marine mammals, and birds, into temporary captivity for treatment and preparation for release.

Rehabilitation Programme: Working with nature authorities and conservation organisations, Tenikwa rehabilitates and releases between 250-450 wild animals annually.

Conservation-Based Tours Raise Awareness: Tenikwa offers various conservation-based tours, including Wild Cat Encounters, to educate visitors about the indigenous wildlife of South Africa. These tours help raise awareness about the challenges facing South Africa's wildlife, such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and the impact of unsustainable practices.

Eco-Tourism and Educational Programmes: Tenikwa supports local communities through eco-tourism, offering tours and unique accommodation options,  where you can sleep just whiskers away from the lions. Educational Programmes like the EcoKidz Family Challenge engage children and teach them about conservation.

With the new addition of Tenikwa Wellness spa, you can book in for relaxing treatments or a package including tours, dinner or lunch.
