Hidden Gems, Secret Viewpoints and Local Stories

Join a guided hike on the breathtaking Robberg Peninsula with one of the Plett Shark Spotters! Discover hidden gems, secret viewpoints, and local stories, all while supporting marine conservation in Plettenberg Bay.

Join Plett Shark Spotters for an unforgettable guided hike on the Robberg Peninsula, led by a local Shark Spotter with a deep passion for Plettenberg Bay’s natural beauty and marine conservation. This immersive experience offers the perfect blend of adventure, education, and community support as hikers explore one of South Africa’s most breathtaking coastal reserves while learning about the wildlife, history, and conservation efforts that define the region.

The hike follows the 5km “half” route along Robberg’s rugged peninsula, offering sweeping ocean views, dramatic cliff faces, and diverse ecosystems ranging from coastal fynbos to rocky shorelines. Unlike a typical trail walk, this guided experience allows participants to journey through the reserve at a relaxed pace, pausing often to take in the scenery and learn about the secrets of the landscape. With small group sizes capped at 8, the atmosphere remains personal and engaging, giving guests the opportunity to ask questions, connect with the guide, and truly appreciate the surroundings.

What makes this hike particularly unique is the opportunity to explore Robberg through the eyes of a Shark Spotter—someone who not only knows the trail but understands its wildlife, history, and connection to marine conservation. Along the way, the guide shares insights about the local Shark Spotters programme, which plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of beachgoers while protecting shark populations through non-lethal monitoring. Guests will learn how this innovative program works, what species of sharks frequent the bay, and why Robberg is a prime spot for sightings and data collection.

Beyond the views and wildlife, this hike offers an opportunity to give back. A portion of each booking supports the ongoing operations of the Plett Shark Spotters program—funding public safety efforts, education, and employment for local conservationists. In this way, every step taken on Robberg helps sustain the bay’s delicate balance between people and nature.

ABOUT PLETT SHARK SPOTTERS

Plett Shark Spotters is a community-based marine conservation and public safety initiative operating in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Established in 2023 and inspired by the success of the Cape Town Shark Spotters program, their mission is to foster peaceful coexistence between people and sharks through education, research, and non-lethal safety measures.

The program creates meaningful employment for local community members, particularly those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. By training and employing ocean-minded individuals as spotters, educators, and guides, we empower locals to become stewards of their coastline while building sustainable careers in conservation. The Shark Spotter vision is a bay where sharks, people, and tourism thrive together.

Through science, public engagement, and grassroots action, Plett Shark Spotters is building a safer ocean, a more informed public, and a more hopeful future for South Africa’s incredible marine biodiversity.
