Ocean Awehness Week

THESE WORKSHOPS ARE NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Checkers Ocean Awehness Week is an immersive ocean education initiative designed to equip local children with essential water safety skills, environmental awareness, and mindfulness techniques. This interactive programme fosters a deep connection between children of Plettenberg Bay and Plett's marine environment while promoting personal well-being and safety in and around the ocean.

Each day, 40 children will be transported to the Lifesaving Club at Central Beach, where they will participate in a structured programme led by experienced facilitators. Activities will include practical water safety education from the NSRI and interactive marine ecology sessions by Plett Shark Spotters.

The programme aims to:

1. Equip children with basic water safety knowledge

- Understanding rip currents, tides, and ocean conditions

- Learning essential terminology and emergency response

- Gaining confidence in ocean environments

2. Introduce children to local environmental care

- Exploring Plettenberg Bay’s marine biodiversity

- Understanding the role of sharks and marine food web.

- Learning conservation techniques and responsible ocean use
