Listening to the Ocean

Understanding and assessing  South Africa’s marine soundscapes, amid rising anthropogenic noise.

The ocean is far from silent. As South Africa’s Blue Economy grows, so too does the amount of human-generated noise entering marine environments. This presentation explores how researchers are using underwater acoustic monitoring to better understand the sounds of the ocean, from natural biological activity to increasing industrial and vessel noise. The research provides valuable baseline data for understanding and managing the impact of underwater noise on marine ecosystems.

Kuhle Kibido is a marine scientist with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and a PhD candidate at Stellenbosch University. His research focuses on underwater noise and marine soundscapes, using acoustic monitoring to better understand how natural and human-generated sounds

influence South Africa’s marine environments.
