Building Long-Term Ecological Baselines in the Greater Dyer Island Marine Ecosystem.

Understanding how marine ecosystems change over time requires long-term data, yet such information is often difficult to collect. Dr Loraine Shuttleworth, in more than a decade of ecological observations gathered through ecotourism operations, has helped build valuable baseline datasets for species including whales, dolphins, sharks and sunfish. The findings demonstrate how collaboration between conservation, tourism and research can support both ecosystem management and sustainable ocean economies.


ABOUT DR LORAINE SHUTTLEWORTH

Dr Loraine Shuttleworth is a conservation physiologist and Head of Research at the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. Her work focuses on long-term monitoring and conservation of the Marine Big 5 within the Greater Dyer Island ecosystem. She has extensive experience in marine mammal research, including doctoral research on southern right whale physiology and calf development.

ABOUT AMY WEBER

Amy Webber is a marine biologist, acquiring a Masters in Tropical Marine Biology at the University of Essex in collaboration with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. Specialising in elasmobranchs, Amy currently operates as the shark biologist and intern coordinator at Marine Dynamics, facilitating environmental monitoring and elasmobranch research through techniques such as photo-identification, underwater video monitoring and species observation. The combined efforts allow a transfer of skills to future marine biologists whilst facilitating evidence-based conservation initiatives for the protection of Gansbaai shark species.
