Indicators of change in the Southern Ocean
Penguins in the Anthropocene

Penguins in the Anthropocene

Penguins are powerful indicators of change in the Southern Ocean. Prof Pierre Pistorius investigates shifting climate conditions that are reshaping their world. Drawing on tracking data and habitat modelling, his presentation shows how penguin populations are likely to shift poleward, with significant range contractions for some species. It also highlights how these changes challenge existing marine protected areas and why new conservation strategies are urgently needed to protect future penguin habitats.

ABOUT PROF PIERRE PISTORIUS

Prof Pierre Pistorius is a marine biologist at Nelson Mandela University and head of the Marine Apex Predator Research Unit. His research focuses on seabirds, seals, and other marine predators, using biologging and long-term ecological data to understand how they respond to environmental change. He has worked across sub-Antarctic and global systems and has published extensively on marine ecosystem dynamics and conservation.
