Finding the Balance

Finding the Balance

Given the current rabies and avian influenza risks to marine animal species, it is important to take proactive steps towards building working groups and creating protocols related to seabirds and marine mammals.

By working together with a unified approach to balance and optimise the health and well-being of people, animals, and ecosystems, professionals from diverse fields such as veterinary medicine, public health, and marine ecology, can explore the vital links between these and  better understand and address the challenges of zoonotic diseases, pollution and climate change that affect both our oceans and coastal communities.

I studied Nature Conservation and have worked in the marine conservation and tourism field for 12.5 years. I am currently CapeNatures Senior Marine Field Ranger, working at Robberg Nature Reserve, Robberg's Marine Protected Area, and Keurbooms River Nature Reserve. I also coordinate the voluntary Plett (marine animal) Stranding Network. My work focuses on protecting marine biodiversity along the Garden Route, I am passionate about working collaboratively, with an integrated and unified approach, with other provincial and national conservation organisations, as well as the public, and combining conservation efforts with tourism to promote environmental education and sustainable ecosystems. My journey from a nature-loving child to an internationally recognized marine ranger exemplifies dedication to environmental stewardship, blending hands-on conservation with tourism and education to protect South Africas unique marine ecosystems I believe in the power of conservation to educate the public and sustain natural resources, and I integrate this philosophy into my daily work.
