Exploring the soundscapes of the ocean.

For many, the ocean is and enigma, with very few people diving beneath the surface. Those that have are amazed at the visual magnificence, a kaleidoscope of colour and movement, the shimmer of shoals of fish and the gallery of invertebrates and flora. Even from these privileged few, a whole spectrum of their experience is missed in the excitement, namely the soundscapes beneath the ocean. Some are obvious, though most sounds are subtle, on the fringe of our perception. In this presentation, some of the sounds are shared with explanations of what they entail. In the evolving field of soundscapes, the sounds that have become white noise are slowly being teased out and interpreted to enrich our experience of the natural world.

ABOUT MARK DIXON

Mark is the founder of the Strandloper Project which conducts citizen science research in the ocean measuring the impact of human activities on inshore and estuarine biodiversity and health. Studies include the ghost fishing, avian entanglements caused by recreational fishing, and the regeneration of degraded reefs by cleaning up lost and discarded fishing gear. Spending time diving to monitor and clean up, the reef is documented using video and fixed point photography.
