SHARK SPOTTERS & THE STORY OF NICOLE

Shark Spotters has commissioned an artwork as an educational tool to inspire curiosity and promote marine conservation. It will become a permanent part of Shark Spotters’ environmental education and outreach programmes, helping learners, visitors and the local community appreciate the true size, biology and importance of one of the ocean’s most iconic predators.

The shark depicted is Nicole, one of the world’s most famous great white sharks. Tagged off Gansbaai in 2003, Nicole completed an extraordinary return migration of more than 20,000 km between South Africa and Western Australia—one of the greatest recorded journeys by any marine animal at the time. Her remarkable story transformed our understanding of great white shark movements and highlighted the incredible migrations these animals undertake.

This project has been made possible through the generosity and collaboration of the Plettenberg Bay community. Shark Spotters extends its sincere thanks to Madeline Hoban for driving the project, David from PNA for donating the canvas, and artists Luzanne Gerrick, Amanda Leggat and Jesse Francis for bringing Nicole to life. We also gratefully acknowledge the continued support of the entire Plettenberg Bay Arts Association, whose commitment to conservation and community education has made this unique initiative possible.

The official handover celebrates the power of art to inspire conservation and highlights the value of community partnerships in protecting our oceans for future generations.
