Join Dr Matthew Zylstra - conservation ecologist, field naturalist and outdoor facilitator - for a guided walk along the estuary he has been quietly observing, recording and falling in love with it (and its wellbeing benefits) for almost 15 years.

Discover secluded spots, shy creatures, hear anecdotes and be gifted the chance to slow right down. This is less a hike and more an invitation: to look closely, discover and to allow yourself the space to feel more connected to a coast-scape that reveals far more than meets the eye.

The walk follows a gentle, flat path from Goose Marsh toward Keurbooms Caravan Park - approximately 2 km return. But this is not really about distance. Unlike a typical trail, this guided experience moves at a relaxed pace, pausing often to soak up the scenery and uncovering life in the landscape underfoot, underwater (in the shallows) and overhead. With a group size of no more than 10, we will keep it personal and interactive - so plenty of room for questions, conversation and for - hopefully - seeing through new eyes.

Along the way, you'll hear about the surprising creatures that turn up here - many of them visitors far from their usual range - and why the Keurbooms is increasingly recognised as the "Cinderella" of South African estuaries: overlooked, understudied and richer in life than it has ever been given credit for. You'll also hear how the estuary has changed with the recent flood events and what that might mean for its immediate future and long-term resilience.

 This hike also offers an opportunity to "pay it forward" with a portion of the proceeds supporting outdoor excursions for learners at Bahia Formosa Primary School.

Bring: Aside from water, sun protection etc, bring footwear that can get wet, as parts of the walk may be soft & muddy or we may choose to wade in the shallows. For those willing to try it, barefoot is an option. Meet at 10:30 at the parking area at the eastern end (Keurbooms estuary side) of Rietvlei Rd. / Meadow Road. Turn off the N2 at Buco / Quartet and drive to the very end.

Dr. Matthew Zylstra is a conservation ecologist and outdoor facilitator, with a passion for our local coastal life. He is the administrator of the Keurbooms Estuary iNaturalist Project - a citizen science initiative that is recording and documenting the public's observations in the estuary. Matt is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Sustainability Transitions, Stellenbosch University, and leads the Southern African Human~Nature Connectedness Working Group, among various other endeavours.
